I can see the truth in your eyes- so stop feeding me your bullshit lies- we’ve hit this topic many times before- and it always ends with me walking out the door- yet I keep walking back to you- always feels like the right thing to do *I’m your dirty little secret- so wrap me in piano strings- and hide me between the sheets- where no one can find me- except you * I’m tired of feeling used and unappreciated- our predicament is so outdated- spinning in circles till I can’t find straight- and your timing is always too late- you want me when I’m not around- and when I’m there you’re nowhere to be found- yet I keep coming back to you- always feels like the right thing to do *I’m your dirty little secret- so wrap me in piano strings- and hide me between the sheets- where no one can find me- except you *
Hold Me Close
From the moment my eyes laid upon you- I knew- I was done for- caught under your spell- while surrounded by hell- my sanctuary from the storm * hold me close in your arms- hold me close when I can’t stop shaking- hold me close while it all crumbles around us- hold me close anytime * from the moment your eyes laid upon me- you knew- you were done for- caught under my spell while surrounded by hell- your sanctuary from the storm * hold you close in my arms- hold you close when you can’t stop shaking- hold you close while it all crumbles around us- hold you close anytime * oh I didn’t plan for you * hold me close in your arms- hold me close when I can’t stop shaking- hold me close while it all crumbles around us- hold me close anytime *
This is what I’ve been searching for- so many wrong turns made- it’s amazing I ended up here- could this all be a dream *oh, but here you are- you are better than any dream come true * there’s no such thing as a perfect fairytale- but what we’ve got is pretty damn close- no magic slipper or chariot awaits- just endless time * oh, but here you are- you are better than any dream come true * I’ve places the past where it belongs- set it on fire and buried it below- I’ve placed the past where it belongs- I’m rising from its ashes- so watch me grow * oh, but here you are- you are better than any dream come true *
A King Instead
All I ever wanted was to find my prince- who knew that I’d be found by a king instead- been through hell and back again- and left for dead- but when you found me- I didn’t need saving- just become the queen I was meant to be for you *your smile makes me melt- your touch makes me yours entirely, forever * when I look deep into your eyes I see a love I’ve never seen before- looking back at me- so drink me in- who knew a love like this could exist outside fairytales * your smile makes me melt- your touch makes me yours entirely, forever * been through hell and back again and left for dead- never thought it would lead to a happy ending instead *your smile makes me melt- your touch makes me yours entirely, forever *
Perfect as Me
I use to hid amongst the shadows- afraid to be who I am- because I was different- and some didn’t understand- over-analyzing the mundane- but needing not to be the same * picked on because I wasn’t tall or the prettiest girl at the ball- always thinking something’s wrong with me- never realizing I’m perfect as me * so I made myself invisible from the world- a shadow of who I was meant to be- convinced I’d never be incredible in this world- and that’s how it was meant to be * picked on because I wasn’t tall or the prettiest girl at the ball- always thinking something’s wrong with me- never realizing I’m perfect as me *
Once Upon a Vine
Life’s not like the fairytales I read about as a child- there’s no crazed witch out there running wild- and I can’t spin hay into gold- and there’s no painting to stop me from growing old *’cause I’ve dealt with my fair share of toads and i had no problems telling them to hit the road* life’s not like the fairytales I read about as a child- there’s no crazed wolf out there running wild- and your nose won’t grow long if you tell me a lie- for my heart and my mind will no longer be denied old *’cause I’ve dealt with my fair share of toads and i had no problems telling them to hit the road* so I will follow the bread crumbs
Some call me a loner- ‘cause I don’t fit in their mold- but you, you call me yours- and now I’ll never be alone- I took the path covered in weeds- but with you by my side that’s all I need *it’s in your arms- it’s in a winding road- that feels like home * come take my hand- let’s take a stand against time- for it shall by yours and mine- let’s stop time on a mountain- or out at sea- get lost in a moment- just you and me need *it’s in your arms- it’s in a winding road- that feels like home * it’s in your eyes- it’s in your smile- it’s in your heart- it’s in your soul need – and it feels like home- it’s in a winding road- that feels like home
Skeletons and Ghosts
she lives in a world of skeletons in closets and secrets kept behind the blinds- tells herself lies and hopes that one day she’ll believe them too- she loves to play head-games- no time for chess when there are hearts to break * she makes the rules up as she goes- not a care for anyone else * she lives in a world surrounded by the ghosts of her past- hoping they won’t see her if she looks the other way- - she loves to play head-games- no time for chess when there are hearts to break * she makes the rules up as she goes- not a care for anyone else * she lives in a world of skeletons- she lives in a world of ghosts- she makes the rules up as she goes
Forever Yours (Abby’s Song)
You hold me up when my strength goes- you are my light, even when nothing is right- we share a love that goes beyond rare- and with a single kiss you take me there *oh my heart is yours- for forever from this day- my heart is yours and that’s how it will always stay* I know the days ahead won’t always be perfect- for life loves to keep up on our toes- but I promise you today that I’ll always remain by your side- oh nothing can tear us apart *oh my heart is yours- for forever from this day- my heart is yours and that’s how it will always stay*
The jagged teeth of the city- from up here looks so damn pretty don’t ya think- don’t ya think the way the light hits your face- amid the backdrop of this place- takes my breath away- we find comfort in the empty spaces- we find comfort in the sweet embraces- we find comfort in the empty spaces * ‘cause when I’m with you, you stop time, stop time- when I’m with you, you heal time, heal time * it took forever to get up here from there- from there the hike was unforgiving and long- so long- but now that we’ve reached the top- nothings gonna stop us now- just watch us know spaces * ‘cause when I’m with you, you stop time, stop time- when I’m with you, you heal time, heal time * you heal time- we find comfort in the empty spaces- we find comfort in the sweet embraces spaces * ‘cause when I’m with you, you stop time, stop time- when I’m with you, you heal time, heal time *
you take that first step and it’s so scary- will you fail or will you fly- if you want to live you can’t be afraid to die * I’ve taken a thousand steps- made a thousand mistakes- but with each step I know what it takes * you have to believe in yourself- no one can do it for you- so enter stage left and let the lights shine upon you- if you want to live you can’t be afraid to die * I’ve taken a thousand steps- made a thousand mistakes- but with each step I know what it takes * if you want to succeed you have to risk it all * I’ve taken a thousand steps- made a thousand mistakes- but with each step I know what it takes *
Like a bird with a broken wing- I tried to fly- I tried to fly- but you held me back with cruel words- like a knife in my back- as time moved on and I grew strong- I tried to fly- I tried to fly- but this time nothing held me back- I was unbroken- I found the strength in the echoes of my past- I could fly- I could fly- for I am unbroken
Sometimes we don't choose the best people to share our lives with. This song is about one of those people. He didn't treat me very well and left me crying more times than not. In addition, I also found out he was cheating on me. You might say I was a tad angry over the whole thing. By the end of it I felt like a "dirty little secret". I always say something good can come out of any relationship, in the case of this one, I learned a lot and wrote my most popular song to date.
Hold Me Close
This was written during the darkest period in my life. I was all alone and wanted nothing more than someone to hold me and tell me everything was going to be ok. This song is a ballad of hope for the love I would one day find and cherish.
Taking the hope from "Hold Me Close" I decided to rise from the ashes and embrace the chances life was sending my way. Not letting my past pain and bruised heart keep me from anything.
A King Instead
Have you ever dreamed of meeting your Prince Charming? Well what if he turned out to be greater than you could have ever dreamed or hoped for. What if you got a king instead? This song toys with this playful idea. Touching on how my past had made me stronger and who I needed to be when my king found me. Sometimes we have to go through hell and back to be the person we are suppose to be.
Perfect as Me
By day I teach voice and piano, to all ages, but generally kids and teenagers. The heartbreaking stories I've been told about how mean kids are to them is a topic very near and dear to my heart. As I was one of those kids. Knowing now that a lot of times people lash out when they are threatened by someone had given me the insight to help them. I might not be able to turn back the clock and heal the wounds of my past, but maybe this song can help anyone who listens to it in knowing that they are perfect just as they are.
Once Upon a Vine
Life’s not like a fairytale. The harsh truth of being an adult. I have always been fascinated by fairytales and thought it would be fun to play with this idea on how they are not realistic in the day to day world.
I came about this song while going for a drive in the desert. The wind playing in my hair, the winding roads ahead of us for miles and the whole time I couldn't be happier. I started writing the lyrics on the drive home that day in my head and let it all come out on paper the next day. I wanted to make it clear that when it's the right person they will love you flaws and all; and that it doesn't matter where you are, but who you're with.
Skeletons and Ghosts
This song is about the pain my mother has caused me. About two years ago she decided to cut all ties with me, for her own personal reasons. Nothing that I did wrong, just that in the life she had made for herself I didn't fit in the picture. One thing about my mother is she has a lot of skeletons in her closets and likes to put them there and never talk about them again. After becoming one of those skeletons in her life I was pained. I tried to write this song in a more abstract way that could appeal to anyone hurt by another.
Forever Yours (Abby’s Song)
A couple of years ago I was asked to sing at a relatives wedding. I thought in addition to singing the songs she and her groom had requested, I would write them their very own love song and surprise them with it. A year later I had recorded it and made a little video with all of their wedding pictures and gave it to them as a one year present. I felt honored to sing at their wedding and to see the love between these two beautiful people.
Last year I was hiking Flat Iron on a perfect day where the temperature wasn't too hot or too cold. As I looked out onto the cityscape in the distance I noticed they looked like jagged teeth. Playing off the same type of emotion as in Winding Road, this time using the metaphor of hiking up a mountain I created this song.
About a year ago I was asked to write a song about success for an upcoming event. I thought long and hard about what success meant to me. Every time I gave it thought one thing always kept coming to the surface: failure. How anyone famous who is considered a success had failed so many times. It's from these mistakes and failures that we are able to achieve greatness.
This is the last song I wrote for this album. I had no idea it would become the title track.
As some of you know I was being scouted by a local record label, which is usually an amazing opportunity that can lead to bigger and better deals. I was excited, my big break was coming.
They seemed to really love what I was doing. That was until we went into the studio. I won't bore you with the bitter details, just know that each time I left, I left in tears.
I learned the hard lesson of, they like to break you to remake you. Why they feel the need to do so, I'll never know. What I do know is I caught on to their game and stopped it before it would eventually break me. After one of these horrid days in the studio with them I wrote this song in one sitting, it just poured out of me. When I was done I knew in my heart that I had just written the title track to the album.
““Unbroken” is the debut album of singer/songwriter April Anne. It’s one of those albums that beautifully straddles multiple worlds. The instrumentation is centered on the piano and the light yet powerful voice of April Anne. It is at times contrasted by full-band arrangements which serve to blow our ears wide-open, but with tact and grace. The opening track “Piano Strings” propels us into our own minds as we excitedly fantasize about our own desires. The sparsity of the arrangement in “Hold Me Close” reflects the spirit of the song. The pizzicato strings, which is quintessentially used to uplift, instead sends on a melancholic journey reminiscent of what we might hear from Bjork. A brutal, sobering statement on a need that transcends human indifference toward each other. “Phoenix” could not be a more aptly titled song. Like a true phoenix rising from the ashes, it is the first time we get a full-band arrangement, which makes it feel all the more powerful. When “Perfect As Me” begins playing, one starts to get the feeling like you heard the song before; however, it quite soon hits its stride with hammering chords and a full-band drop that’s even worthy of some good head-banging. “Once Upon A Vine” harkens back to the modern music of the turn of the 20th century, with its playful yet melancholic tone and a piano part that is surely playing the part of the “Vine.” Hope is a big message in April Anne’s new album “Unbroken.” This is exemplified in “A Winding Road.” The movement of the song follows the ebbs and flows of a true relationship, something that many ballads simply cannot achieve, but then we get a song like “Empty Spaces” which surprises us the rhythmic mobility of the vocals on top of the piano. “To Live” is a testament to the battle that we all face in life. We’re all “afraid to live and afraid to die,” illustrating the predicament we all feel when we’re about to take a leap of faith. The final and eponymous track, “Unbroken,” is one of those pieces that takes us through a jungle of emotions. A message of anthemic strength and resilience in the face of all that we might struggle with in our lives. It teaches us to stand up and proclaim our own desires with quiet confidence. Ultimately, “Unbroken” makes you feel like you can do anything. Like your dreams are right around the corner and all you have to do is hold on tight enough to reach them. “Unbroken” the debut album by April Anne will be released February 18, 2017.”
